The Navam Perahera inspires Sri Lanka guests with tradition in February and colourful performances the Gangaramaya Temple is situated directly on the Beira Lake in the heart of Colombo. Every year in February the Navam Perahera begins a festive procession with music, dance, and dozens of decorated elephant, which shows the religious and cultural traditions of the country particularly colourful way. The procession takes place on the full moon day of Sinhala Navam, February. This will be on the 17th of February 2011. Hundreds of monks in colourful clothes to attend and show as their solidarity with the Buddhist faith. Dancers and drummers coming from all over the country, to present their own region with their performances, which differ in rhythm, instrument type and style, always a little bit of the other. Dozens of elephants, which are brought from Sri Lanka to the spectacle are a highlight of the Navam Perahera. Adorned with costumes and jewels, they run majestically between the dancers, drummers, and monks. One of the elephants carries a basket, where Holy relics are kept, that give spiritual meaning of the procession on the back. For over 30 years, every year more than a million visitors attend the event. This is a special experience for vacationers. Percussionists, conch shell blowers, Stiltwalkers, and flutist make the parade a spectacular event around the Buddhist beliefs.
